A new virtual reality (VR) initiative has been introduced to support homeless individuals in London in improving their mental health and preparing for independent living.

Over 140 residents at Apax assisted living and supported housing service in the London Borough of Lewisham now have access to the TRIPP meditation app through 10 Meta Quest 2 VR headsets, donated by Meta.

Following a successful eight-week trial from November 2023 to January 2024, the VR technology was implemented at Apax to assist residents in managing stress, regulating moods, and enhancing digital skills for future independence.

According to data from Crisis, a homelessness charity, a significant percentage of homeless individuals struggle with mental health issues, with 45% diagnosed among those experiencing homelessness and 80% among rough sleepers.

Israa Qaddourah, project manager at Apax, explained, “The vast majority of our residents have the potential to live independently one day. Our new VR wellness program has delivered incredible results, improving mental health and instilling confidence for a more fulfilling life.”

Meta’s Era Sahni commended Apax for their impactful work and the positive impact the Meta Quest headsets are having on vulnerable individuals, assisting them in reintegrating into society.

Partnering with Insight Enterprises, Apax ensured a smooth deployment of the VR technology, providing the necessary hardware, software, and integration for the organization and its residents.

Plans are in place to further utilize VR within Apax for staff training and enhancing clients’ life skills and digital capabilities, building on the success of similar studies showcasing the benefits of VR in mental health recovery.

Overall, VR technology continues to demonstrate its potential in various healthcare applications, from supporting healthcare professionals in decision-making to aiding patients in rehabilitation and mental health treatment.
