Situated in the heart of Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley, Shaodatkhon Oripova’s greenhouse has undergone a remarkable transformation. Equipped with digital sensors connected to the internet, the 62-year-old farmer can now monitor and control the temperature, humidity, light, and soil moisture. Uzbek farmers have also adopted drip irrigation techniques.
Shaodatkhon reflects on the past, noting that much of her earnings were previously spent on utility bills and fertilizers. Her farm produces a variety of herbs, tomatoes, lemons, corn, and clover.
With the help of sensors, Shaodatkhon can now regulate inputs more effectively. Her mobile phone alerts her to any adjustments needed in the greenhouse.
