New Phone Technology Improves Access to GP Appointments
GP practices across England have implemented upgraded phone systems to enhance patient access to appointments. Nearly every practice in the country has transitioned to digital systems, allowing for better call management and reducing the morning appointment rush.
These upgrades have significantly increased patients’ ability to reach their practices, with a third more successful connections reported during trials. Over 90% of practices now utilize cloud-based systems, ensuring phone lines are always open.
Remaining practices are scheduled for upgrades in the coming month, with the goal of improving overall patient experience. Dr. Amanda Doyle of NHS England commended the initiative, noting the impact on appointment availability and patient satisfaction.
Additional training for staff handling calls has also been provided, streamlining the process and directing patients to the appropriate care providers. One example showcased a drastic reduction in abandoned calls and improved care for frequent patients.
Despite the positive outcomes, concerns have been raised about rising costs associated with the new systems. Dr. Neil Bhatia emphasized the need for additional clinical staff and funding to address the underlying issues in GP practices.
While the upgraded phone technology is a step in the right direction for patient access, addressing broader challenges within the healthcare system remains essential for long-term improvement.
