University of Dundee nursing students pilot digital tool to track learning
Nursing students at the University of Dundee are testing a new digital tool created by NES Technology Service and the NES Nursing and Midwifery pre-registration and practice education team. The ePad (Electronic Placement Assessment Documents) app is replacing a 350-page paper version, allowing students to digitally record their progress and achievements during their placements.
The app, built using cloud-based technology and the Microsoft Azure platform, captures evidence of skills, procedures, and proficiencies as required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. It is accessible via the Turas learning and management platform for health and social care, enabling students to upload documents to their personal library and receive feedback from educators.
Students and staff at the University of Dundee have welcomed the convenience of the ePad, as it eliminates the need to carry around large folders of paperwork during nursing placements. Additionally, the University is collaborating with the National Robotarium of Heriot-Watt University to develop an AI-powered system to support trainee surgeons in their laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery training.
