As the head of coffee purchasing at Equator Coffees, a company dedicated to quality, sustainability, and social responsibility, I often get asked, “What coffee should I buy to ensure the farmers are treated fairly?” The answer to this question is complex, and involves understanding the different realities of coffee farmers in various countries.
One way to support a sustainable and equitable supply chain is to familiarize yourself with local or regional coffee roasting companies. Look for detailed information about the farmers who produced the coffee, as this indicates a strong and sustainable business relationship between the roaster and the coffee farmer.
When shopping in a supermarket, look for farm-specific information and third-party certifications on coffee packaging, such as Fair Trade and organic seals. These certifications ensure fair prices for producers and environmentally friendly cultivation practices.
Furthermore, be cautious of big brands that may exploit coffee farmers by offering very low prices. Supporting smaller, local coffee roasting companies not only benefits your community but also ensures higher quality and more sustainable coffee for everyone involved.
