“There’s no way I’m middle-aged—not me,” I staunchly declared to my 15-year-old daughter when she suggested I was part of the older generation. However, she promptly reminded me that at 41, I was already past the midpoint of the average life expectancy for women in the U.S. It was a reality check that hit harder than turning 40. But, I’ve made the decision to embrace my middle-aged status and take proactive steps to care for my body as it changes.
My body is no longer the same as it was in my twenties or early thirties. I used to engage in intense workouts, indulged in a few too many mixed drinks, and pulled all-nighters with little to no consequences. But now, a wrong pillow or a forceful sneeze can leave me feeling injured. However, with age comes wisdom, and I’ve learned that pushing myself too hard doesn’t equate to better health. I want to share my healthy aging advice and how I’m gently and reasonably caring for my body at this stage of life.
I recognize the importance of staying physically active, as a sedentary lifestyle can accelerate aging. Despite dealing with some pain issues this year, I prioritized injury prevention and sought the guidance of a functional movement specialist. Prioritizing functional movements, such as squats, and incorporating a movement screening into my routine has become essential. I’ve also learned to move with proper form and balance pushing my limits while preventing future injuries.
In addition to physical activity, I’m focusing on nourishing my body with the right foods. Instead of restrictive eating for a smaller body, I’m fueling my body to age well and navigate perimenopause. Emphasizing nutrient-rich, plant-based foods and prioritizing high-quality carbs has become a key part of my diet. I’m also making a conscious effort to prioritize sleep, especially as my body undergoes the transition to menopause.
Supplements have also become a part of my routine, with a focus on omega-3, vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin B supplements. I’m striving to take care of both my mind and body, aiming for optimal brain function and slower aging to fully relish each passing year. My goal is to view my middle-aged years as vibrant and fulfilling, and I believe that by embracing healthy aging practices, I can achieve this.
