TDP-43 Pathology is Common in Old Age, and Correlates with Risk of Dementia
TDP-43 is a protein that can misfold and accumulate in the brains of aging individuals, similar to other proteins implicated in neurodegeneration. This protein has been linked to dementia risk, highlighting its importance in age-related brain diseases. Research suggests that preventing the buildup of altered proteins like TDP-43 should be a focus for researchers in the field.
Limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy (LATE) is a newly recognized degenerative brain disease that primarily affects the limbic regions, resembling early Alzheimer’s symptoms but progressing more slowly. A recent study in Finnish autopsies revealed the prevalence of LATE in individuals over 85, indicating its significant association with dementia in the oldest old.
