Let’s have an open conversation about sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Rates have been on the rise in recent years, putting anyone who is sexually active at risk.

In a survey of women and individuals assigned female at birth aged 35 to 64, over half of the respondents were unaware of the increase in STIs. And despite the risk, nearly 8 out of 10 respondents were not concerned about contracting an STI.

Dr. Tomeka Roberts, an OB-GYN, highlighted the rise in STIs like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis. She emphasized the importance of regular screening and safe sex practices, noting a decline in condom usage.

While most respondents see their healthcare providers regularly, many reported that their HCPs do not inquire about STI testing or sexual health.

Although 8 out of 10 respondents felt comfortable discussing STIs with their HCP, stigma may prevent some from initiating these conversations. However, Roberts assured that HCPs are there to address your concerns.

The survey revealed gaps in knowledge regarding common STIs and protective measures. Education is crucial to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their sexual health.

Remember, what you don’t know can harm you when it comes to STIs. Have open conversations with your healthcare provider and prioritize your sexual health.

Remember: we need to talk about STIs.
