Bananas are a popular fruit worldwide, with varying opinions on when to eat them. New research suggests that green bananas could offer major anti-cancer benefits, especially for those at risk of hereditary cancer.
Eat Green Bananas, Fight Cancer
A study by researchers at the Universities of Newcastle and Leeds found that a starch in unripe bananas can reduce the risk of certain cancers by more than 60%. This could be a game-changer in preventing hereditary cancer.
The Trial
The CAPP2 trial involved nearly a thousand patients with Lynch syndrome, the most common form of hereditary colorectal cancer. Over two years, participants consumed resistant starch, which significantly reduced the risk of various cancers.
“Resistant starch feeds beneficial gut bacteria and may reduce cancer development by changing bacterial metabolism to protect DNA from damage,” says Professor John Mathers.
The study, led by experts at Newcastle and Leeds Universities, had a double-blind follow-up for 10 years, showing promising results in cancer prevention.
Combine It With Aspirin
Combining resistant starch with aspirin can further reduce the risk of colon cancer, making it a powerful preventive measure against various types of cancer.
“Aspirin and resistant starch work together to reduce cancer risk significantly, making them essential for high-risk individuals,” explains Mathers.
Important Information
The starch in green bananas offers a less invasive and accessible alternative to prevent hereditary cancers like Lynch syndrome. This groundbreaking research highlights the potential of dietary interventions in cancer prevention.
Further Research Required
While more research is needed to fully understand how green banana starch works, this study marks a significant step in preventing hereditary cancers naturally and affordably. It underscores the role of nutrition in disease prevention and the importance of ongoing research in this field.
