Physical exercise often focuses on the external, such as form and strength. However, somatic workouts emphasize the internal experience of movement, both emotionally and physically. Rather than just the execution of movements, somatic workouts aim to tune into the body’s inner workings. The Class is a popular type of somatic workout that uses music, movement, and breath to create sensation in the body and observe thoughts. This approach to exercise gained increased popularity in 2023, with “somatic workout” being a top trending fitness term on Google. Despite the buzz around somatic workouts, experts like Jaycee Gossett and Sarah Warren caution that the term is becoming a “buzzword” in health and wellness, and that there are many types of somatic movement education and therapy to consider.

A somatic workout involves consciously focusing on the internal experience of movement, rather than the external appearance or end result. This approach can include a variety of exercises such as shaking, yoga, and breathwork. Somatic workouts are rooted in the idea of slowing down exercise to focus on how certain movements make you feel, with the goal of releasing repressed or difficult emotions. The benefits of somatic workouts can include relieving pain, releasing tension, improving posture and movement, and releasing emotions and trauma. To practice a somatic workout, it’s essential to tune into the physical and emotional sensations of movement, rather than focusing on the end result. This can involve slow, exploratory movements and being guided by a practitioner to help connect with the body’s internal signals. Ultimately, somatic workouts offer a unique approach to exercise that encourages individuals to deepen their awareness and holistic care for themselves.
