Sodalis and 12 Oaks Senior Living are facing challenges in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl in Texas. More than a week after the storm hit, some senior living communities still remain without power. Sodalis had to relocate residents from their Cypress Woods location to another community due to ongoing power outages. President Traci Taylor-Roberts expressed frustration with the slow response from electric company CenterPoint Energy.
Similarly, 12 Oaks Senior Living also saw power outages affecting nine communities in the Houston region. Residents at Reunion Court of Kingwood had to be relocated as power has yet to be restored. President Greg Puklicz criticized the lack of preparedness from CenterPoint and the City of Houston in prioritizing power restoration to senior living communities.
Both operators emphasized the need for better emergency planning and priority for power restoration in future situations. Despite no physical damage, the prolonged power outages have added operational costs for both Sodalis and 12 Oaks, including the use of generators, overtime pay for staff, and relocation expenses.
Looking ahead, operators like Sodalis are concerned about rising property insurance costs after each storm. They are calling for more communication and collaboration from energy providers and government entities to ensure the safety and well-being of Texas citizens, especially those in vulnerable senior living communities.
