The benefits of increased telomerase expression through gene therapy have been well-demonstrated in mice, showcasing improved health and extended lifespan. Telomeres play a crucial role in limiting cell replication, with stem cells being able to use telomerase to extend their telomeres indefinitely. As we age, stem cell function declines, leading to a decrease in average telomere length. However, recent research has shown that by restoring telomerase levels in aged mice, a cascade of positive changes in gene expression and cell function can be initiated. This breakthrough has the potential to reverse multiple hallmarks of aging, such as cellular senescence, tissue inflammation, and cognitive decline. Furthermore, a small molecule compound has been identified that activates telomerase, leading to improved neuron formation, memory, muscle performance, and overall health in aging models. This exciting development highlights the promising role of telomerase in mitigating age-related diseases and enhancing quality of life in older individuals.
