Six NHS hospitals in the north of England have successfully implemented the National Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC) digital pathology system, revolutionizing the way pathology services are delivered.
The NPIC digital pathology system was launched in April 2024 within the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT), a collaboration of six NHS trusts serving a population of three million in West Yorkshire and Harrogate.
This cutting-edge system enables clinicians to scan slides in ultra-high definition, facilitating instant and secure sharing with experts across the network. Craig Sayers, a consultant histopathologist, noted the increased efficiency and improved patient care since the implementation of NPIC digital pathology at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
The project, described by Leeds Teaching Hospitals as one of the largest IT endeavors in the NHS in over 20 years, aims to enhance cancer diagnosis through advanced technology and efficient data sharing among healthcare institutions.
