“Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?”
The social media manager behind Elmo’s account on Sesame Street couldn’t have imagined the viral response to a simple check-in post. Seven months later, the post has garnered over 165,000 likes, 20,000 responses, and 61,000 reposts, sparking a conversation around mental health and emotional well-being.
Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street, decided to delve deeper into this important topic. Teaming up with The Harris Poll, they launched a unique index on the state of well-being in America to shed light on the mental health crisis and understand what drives well-being today.
The overwhelming response to Elmo’s post led to a comprehensive study on mental health and emotional well-being in American families. The State of Well-Being Report reveals key insights from 2,012 interviews, highlighting the need for open discussions on mental health with children and the importance of social and emotional skills in schools.
As the conversation around mental health evolves, more Americans are recognizing the need for kindness and empathy in society. The survey found that nurturing kindness in children has a positive ripple effect, contributing to a caring society. By focusing on teaching children to be kind and help others, we can take significant steps towards addressing the mental health crisis.
