T. Graham Brown, 69, recently became the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry after a career spanning over 50 years in country music. Known for hits like Hell and High Water, Don’t Go To Strangers, and Darlene, Brown shares with SENIOR PLANET how his work helping people get sober has become as important to him as his music.

Q: Can we call you T?
T: Yes, most people call me T, but some friends call me “His T-Ness” and my wife Sheila calls me Tony. When I started my career, there was already a famous Tony Brown in Nashville, so I changed to T. Graham Brown.

Q: What does being inducted into the Grand Ole Opry mean to you?
T: It’s the highest honor of my 51-year career. I’ve received awards and recognition, but being an Opry member is the pinnacle for me.

Q: What are some career highlights?
T: I started singing at the University of Georgia in 1973 and have worked with many legends in the industry. I have a new album coming out called From Memphis to Muscle Shoals, a tribute to 1960s soul music with duets featuring artists like Dwight Yoakam and Tanya Tucker.

Q: You stumbled into a music career by accident?
T: Yes, I was pursuing a baseball career until I switched paths and started singing demos in Nashville. Capitol Records signed me, and I began touring with Kenny Rogers. It was a fast-paced journey.

Q: How do you maintain a happy marriage for 44 years?
T: My wife Sheila has been by my side through thick and thin, especially when I struggled with addiction. I’ve been sober for about 15 years now, thanks to her support.

Q: Your mission now is to help others get sober?
T: Yes, helping people overcome addiction and mental illness is our life’s work. My song “Wine Into Water” has touched many lives and spread globally, leading to a Bollywood movie adaptation.

Q: How do you prepare for your tours?
T: I have a great bus and band, and Sheila always travels with me. I perform in old theaters, sharing stories and singing for intimate audiences. It’s a fulfilling experience.

Q: Do you follow a specific diet or workout routine?
T: I focus on maintaining my weight and enjoy activities like yard work and walking. Despite recent hip replacements, I stay active and continue to deliver great performances.
