At the Digital Healthcare Show 2024, Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust CIO Andrew Raynes shared six essential actions for NHS trusts embarking on their AI journey.
During his keynote presentation titled ‘Avoiding the hype: There’s more to digital maturity than expensive AI’ at ExCeL London, Raynes outlined the following key actions for a successful AI journey:
- Develop process, system and governance (clinical safety)
- Understand and prioritize AI opportunities and obtain buy-in
- Nurture the deployment team, define key performance indicators and monitor impact
- Ensure data integrity, relevance, and impartiality – review/update policies
- Conduct point-of-care testing, start small before scaling
- Implement measures to address bias, ethical, privacy, and safety concerns
Raynes emphasized the importance of integrating AI into clinical workflows to enhance decision-making, improve patient care, and reduce waiting times. He also debunked common AI myths and highlighted the rising cybersecurity threats in healthcare.
In another session at the event, Emma Hollings and Carolyn Crooks discussed the significance of improving digital systems at NHS trusts to enhance patient experiences and extract valuable insights from data.
