University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) NHS Foundation Trust has partnered with systems integrator Cinos to modernize its unified communications platform.

The deployment of a Cisco-powered telephony service is currently underway at Royal Derby Hospital and is scheduled to be implemented across the trust by February 2025.

With a mission to deliver acute treatment and care to over a million individuals in South Derbyshire and East Staffordshire, UHDB sought a cloud-based solution to facilitate seamless communication for its staff.

Simon Reynolds, head of voice services at UHDB, emphasized the necessity of establishing a standardized platform across all trust sites to meet the evolving needs of their agile workforce.

The new cloud-based telephony system will streamline communication amongst staff members, incorporating integration with Microsoft Teams for enhanced collaboration.

Following a merger in 2018, UHDB operated across five sites with disparate telephony systems, necessitating the implementation of a session initiation protocol (SIP) service to optimize call management and future-proof the telephony infrastructure.

Cinos will also provide an emergency telephone solution at the trust’s acute sites to ensure uninterrupted communication during critical situations.

Dan Worman, executive director of Cinos, commended UHDB’s efforts to modernize their communication systems, emphasizing the importance of reliable and resilient platforms in healthcare settings.

In a separate initiative, UHDB introduced the BadgerNet electronic patient record and Badger Notes online portal in its maternity services in June 2024.
