How do high levels of triglycerides affect my risk of heart attack or stroke? How do I know if I have high triglycerides?Should I avoid certain foods if I have high triglyceride levels? How can I lower my triglycerides and my risk of cardiovascular disease?

Triglycerides are not cholesterol, but they are related to LDL and HDL cholesterol. They are essential lipids that, like cholesterol, travel through the blood to perform vital functions in the body. High levels of triglycerides, much like LDL cholesterol, can pose risks to heart health.

We spoke with Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a New York cardiologist and member of the Women’s Health Advisory Council at HealthyWomen, to discuss strategies for managing high triglycerides.

How do high levels of triglycerides affect my risk of heart attack or stroke?

A standard lipid panel measures total cholesterol and triglycerides, with high triglycerides raising the risk of heart attack and stroke by promoting atherosclerosis in the blood vessel walls. Very high levels can also lead to pancreatitis, underscoring the importance of managing triglycerides.

How do I know if I have high triglycerides?

There are no symptoms for high triglycerides, making it necessary to get a lipid panel to check your levels. Different levels indicate different risks, with levels above 150 mg/dL warranting a discussion with your healthcare provider about managing cardiovascular risks.

Should I avoid certain foods if I have high triglyceride levels?

Managing high triglycerides involves assessing your diet, avoiding alcohol, fats, simple carbohydrates, and sugars. Instead, opt for a Mediterranean-style diet with healthy fats and whole grains, as well as regular exercise to improve triglyceride levels.

How can I lower my triglycerides and my risk of cardiovascular disease?

Dietary changes like consuming more fish can help lower triglycerides, while moderate to high levels may require prescription-strength fish oils or omega-3s. Lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss and reduced alcohol intake, are also beneficial in managing cardiovascular risks associated with elevated triglycerides.
