Kim Ledgerwood found herself drifting off to sleep after giving birth to her baby boy, only to be rudely awakened by the urgency of a postpartum hemorrhage. This experience opened her eyes to the harsh reality of maternal mortality, a growing concern in the United States. The rates of maternal death have been on the rise, with postpartum hemorrhage being a leading cause of mortality, especially among people of color.
Maternal mortality rates have more than doubled in the past decade in the U.S. and remained alarmingly high in 2022. People of color, particularly Black women and American Indian and Alaska Native women, are disproportionately affected by maternal mortality. Lack of access to care and insurance coverage contribute to these disparities.
Postpartum hemorrhage, characterized by severe bleeding after birth, is a major contributor to maternal mortality. Timely recognition and treatment are critical to preventing poor outcomes. Understanding the risk factors, signs, and treatment options for postpartum hemorrhage can make a difference in saving lives.
