Patient Data Exposed Online After Cyber Attack in South East London
Confirmed by NHS England, cyber criminals have released patient data online claiming it was stolen in an attack on Synnovis. The ransomware attack by Russian cyber criminal group Qilin on June 3, 2024, has led to significant disruption in pathology services across south east London.
NHSE is working with partners to determine the extent of the breach and if NHS patients are affected. Synnovis is conducting a thorough analysis with the NHS and cybersecurity experts to identify the data leaked and whether it originated from their systems.
The attack has impacted several NHS trusts in the region, resulting in the rescheduling of hundreds of operations and appointments. The disruption is expected to persist as investigations continue. Elsewhere, NHS Dumfries and Galloway issued a warning to nearly 150,000 patients about potential data theft and exposure following a cyber attack in March 2024.
This incident underscores the ongoing threat of cyber attacks on healthcare organizations and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard patient information.
