Northamptonshire hospitals lead the way in transitioning to the NHS Federated Data Platform (FDP)

The University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) NHS Group, which comprises Kettering General Hospital and Northampton General Hospital, have become the pioneers in moving to a local instance of the NHS Federated Data Platform (FDP).

With the FDP, staff at these hospitals can now access information from different clinical and HR systems in one central location, providing them with real-time data for better decision-making.

Rebecca Taylor, director of transformation and quality improvement at UHN, highlighted the benefits of having a simplified view of relevant data to support decision-making, ultimately leading to productivity gains and reduced wait times for patients.

Vin Diwakar, national director for transformation at NHS England, emphasized the transformational potential of the FDP in delivering coordinated care by connecting and utilizing data effectively.

The transition to the FDP is part of a broader initiative to enhance healthcare delivery, with plans to roll out the platform to additional pilot sites by July 2024.

Through the FDP, UHN is streamlining its theatre productivity program by consolidating theatre schedules, patient waiting lists, and staff rosters for more efficient surgery scheduling.

The phased implementation of the FDP, expected to take place between 2024 and 2027, will leverage transparency and privacy-enhancing technology to process personal data securely.

As part of the transition, products and dashboards currently available on the National Data Platform will be integrated into the national instance of the FDP, expanding functionality for users.

Overall, the move to the FDP marks a significant milestone in improving data accessibility and enhancing healthcare delivery for patients across Northamptonshire.
