AG Rhodes, a nonprofit senior living provider, has recently opened its first memory care community, marking the beginning of a new phase of growth for the organization. The $37.5 million, 75,000-square-foot community is designed as a household model for 72 residents living with dementia. Featuring private rooms, a community kitchen, dining room, living room, sunroom, gardens, and a rehabilitation gym space, the community aims to enhance resident care and quality of life. CEO Deke Cateau envisions this project as a catalyst for providing proper dementia care by 2026. Inspired by smaller household models observed during a trip to the Netherlands, AG Rhodes has incorporated elements of community volunteership and safety modifications into the design. The development includes unique programs such as horticulture therapy and music therapy. Planning for the future, Cateau foresees expansion of memory care-focused communities at all three of AG Rhodes’ locations, with a focus on training staff and enhancing wellness programming. Challenges regarding potential future regulation in nursing care are being addressed through advocacy efforts in partnership with state entities. Looking ahead, Cateau sees promising opportunities for growth in value-based care in senior living as Medicare Advantage plans gain traction.
