Haris Shuaib, a consultant clinical scientist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, has raised concerns about a “deployment blockage” hindering the widespread adoption of AI in the NHS.
During a keynote session at the Digital Health Networks Exchange event in London on 12 September 2024, Shuaib emphasized that while some aspects of AI deployment in the NHS are functioning, they are not sufficient to fully implement the technology.
Shuaib highlighted various challenges such as the lack of evidence on AI’s impact on patient outcomes, high transaction costs, institutional bottlenecks, and coordination issues contributing to the market failure in healthcare AI.
He urged for greater investment in training and resources to ensure the safe and effective integration of AI in the NHS.
Shuaib presented an “AI transformation playbook” outlining the necessary steps for NHS trusts to become AI-driven organizations, emphasizing the importance of practical experience with the technology before devising an AI strategy.
He also expressed enthusiasm about the strategic partnership between Newton’s Tree and radiology technology firm Hexarad, aiming to revolutionize access to technology in NHS radiology departments.
In a separate development, Lord Ara Darzi’s independent investigation highlighted the potential of AI to revolutionize patient care in the NHS, urging policymakers and healthcare leaders to prioritize the development of a comprehensive AI roadmap.
These insights come amid a report by The Health Foundation, which underlines the need for a clear strategy for AI adoption in the NHS, suggesting a concerted effort to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in healthcare.
