Sierra Greenlee experienced every parent’s worst nightmare on March 22, 2018, when she lost her three-year-old daughter, Arya, who slipped into a coma and stopped breathing due to undiagnosed type 1 diabetes.
There are two types of diabetes; type 1 and type 2. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas no longer produces insulin, while in type 2, the body still produces insulin but the cells are unable to use it efficiently. Both types can be dangerous if left untreated.
The signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes can develop rapidly in children and are often difficult to detect. Parents are advised to remain vigilant for any sudden changes in their child’s appearance or behavior.
In order to be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a doctor must perform a physical exam on a child and take a blood test. Unfortunately, it is not common to test a child for diabetes unless they exhibit symptoms.
Type 1 diabetes can be managed through careful monitoring, insulin administration, healthy eating, regular physical activity, and stress management. There’s currently no way to prevent or cure type 1 diabetes, and it is important for parents to pay close attention to their child’s behavior and talk to a doctor as soon as they notice anything unusual.
With proper management and a healthy lifestyle, children with type 1 diabetes can lead full and happy lives.
