The Memory Care Innovation program celebrates industry leaders who are reshaping cognitive care in various sectors including behavioral health, home health, hospice, senior housing, and skilled nursing. Individuals nominated for the Memory Care Innovation Award are high-performing employees who champion vision, advocacy, and care for those with memory-related disorders.

This week, Memory Care Business interviewed Kaitlin Reilly, Corporate Director of Cognitive Wellbeing at Acts Retirement-Life Communities. She highlighted the importance of education in the industry and the balance between safety and innovation in memory care.

Why did you choose to work in memory care?

Working with older adults, especially those with cognitive change, has always been my passion. It is fulfilling to help them find joy and meaning in their lives and educate others about the challenges they face.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in memory care?

Continuous education is crucial in supporting individuals with cognitive change and dispelling stigma. Quality education positively impacts our interactions with these individuals.

What change would you like to see in the future of memory care?

I aim to create inclusive experiences for those with cognitive change and find innovative ways to support them in their existing environments.

What is the biggest obstacle to innovation in memory care, and how do you address it?

Balancing safety with innovation is a challenge. We need to explore new approaches while ensuring the well-being of individuals with cognitive change.

How do you envision the future of memory care?

Embracing joy, meaning, and possibility will shape the future of memory care.

What qualities should all Memory Care Innovation Award winners have?

Genuine empathy is essential to understand the experiences of individuals with cognitive change and their families.

If you could advise yourself on your first day in the industry, what would you say?

Always prioritize the well-being and happiness of residents to find true meaning and purpose in your work.
