After two decades in the tech industry and a career as an evidence-based fitness program instructor, Sue-May Lin joined the Senior Planet team in late 2023 as a Mandarin-speaking tech trainer. We caught up with this Californian to discuss the upcoming Lunar New Year and her passion for making artisanal chocolates.
What are some of your favorite aspects of being a trainer?
One of my favorite parts is witnessing seniors applying the knowledge they have gained to enhance their daily lives. The rapid changes in our world inspire seniors to learn new skills, and seeing their eagerness to do so motivates me.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
My passion is crafting artisanal chocolates. It’s a serene and beautiful experience, from tempering the chocolate to packaging the confections. Although it involves a lot of steps, the entire journey is wonderful, especially when I get to share the chocolates with my family and friends.
With the Lunar New Year approaching, how do you celebrate?
Having spent many years in the United States, the Lunar New Year is a nostalgic time for me. I miss the traditional food my mom used to prepare with such dedication. Now, with my family here, we make dumplings and include candy in some of them. It’s a tradition that brings joy and good fortune for the year.
This year is the Year of the Dragon, a special symbol of great power, strength, and wisdom.
What does Aging with Attitude mean to you?
Living the second phase of our lives with purpose is crucial. Having a positive attitude and a sense of purpose, regardless of one’s interests, is important. And, as they say, “old is gold” – I feel wiser now than I did thirty or forty years ago.
