Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with diagnoses estimated at two to three times the rate in the US, Canada, and the UK. (1) Ryan Glossop of Perth, Australia took the opportunity to get his skin checked as part of a work program and soon found himself on a long journey back to health after being diagnosed with melanoma in November 2018. (2)
Glossop’s melanoma developed from nevus spilus, a patch of hyperpigmentation on the skin that is not usually associated with melanoma but can be in rare cases like his. Glossop’s wife, Fallon, shared his story on social media and used her platform to raise funds in support of skin cancer awareness. (3)
Glossop’s experience has inspired him and his wife to raise awareness of skin cancer and the importance of regular skin checks. It is a reminder that being vigilant and monitoring your skin for signs of skin cancer is key to catching cancer in its earliest stages. (4)
