Adapting and exporting the Dutch Hogeweyk model to the U.S. is a challenging endeavor, but Lutheran Senior Services (LSS) is forging ahead with a new concept at Meramec Bluffs Senior Living community in St. Louis, Missouri. The Towne Plaza at the Bluffs offers innovative memory support inspired by the Hogeweyk model. This memory care wing includes 29 apartments and indoor “destination spaces” like a general store, art studio, pet shop, and florist. The design aims to create a more person-centered care environment, changing perceptions of dementia. LSS plans to implement elements of the Hogeweyk model in future developments, continuing to improve the resident experience.
