Leicester launches groundbreaking NHS trial of smart inhalers for children
Around 300 children and young people in Leicester will receive smart inhalers that monitor usage and provide feedback through a smartphone app as part of an NHS-funded study. The Hailie digital inhalers will be used for six months to assess their effectiveness in preventing asthma attacks among high-risk children.
The study aims to monitor medication use, asthma control, and the number of asthma attacks experienced. If successful, it could pave the way for wider adoption of smart inhalers within the NHS.
Dr. Erol Gaillard, leading the study at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, stated, “This could be a real turning point for helping children with high-risk asthma in the UK.”
The trial, backed by various healthcare organizations, aims to improve asthma control amongst participants. Results are expected in early 2025.
Adherium, the creator of the Hailie solution, highlights that 21,000 children are admitted to A&E annually due to asthma attacks in the UK, showing the importance of such innovations.
