Since her college days, Kimmi Grant Scott has proudly embraced the title of “God’s girl,” a nickname that speaks to her enduring belief in divine protection. Little did the Love & Marriage: Huntsville star know that in 2022, her faith would face the ultimate test. While innocently running her hand over her right breast, Scott discovered a lump that was later diagnosed as triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of the disease. Despite initial shock and disbelief, her unwavering trust in God remained steadfast. She reflected, “I was completely sure that He wouldn’t have allowed me to find my cancer where and when I did if His intention was not to save me from it.”
As a registered nurse, Scott made the courageous decision to share her cancer journey on the OWN reality show, aiming to inspire and educate others. Through her platform, she shed light on breast cancer disparities in the Black community. Following a year-long battle that included chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, she emerged victorious, cancer-free. Viewing her experience through the lens of a “God’s girl,” Scott discovered a newfound purpose: becoming the advocate her loved ones always knew she could be. “I believe some of this was destined to happen to help me become a stronger voice—to show me that I cannot remain silent. There are many people who need to hear me.”
Empowered by her journey, Scott now uses her voice to bring awareness to breast cancer disparities and advocate for those in need. Her work with organizations like Sisters Network Inc and the Ora Lee Foundation underscores her commitment to supporting women of color affected by breast cancer. Through initiatives like her “Bowling for Boobies” event, which now takes place in April to extend breast cancer awareness beyond October, Scott continues to spread hope and education.
Reflecting on her journey, Scott recognizes the newfound depth of her strength. “This journey taught me that I am much stronger than I ever imagined,” she shared. “Mentally overcoming the battle first and foremost, and then enduring the physical challenges, showed me a resilience I never knew I possessed.” Her unwavering faith and resilience serve as a beacon of inspiration for all who hear her story.
