Jersey General Hospital Implements Electronic Prescribing for Outpatients
The Government of Jersey’s Health and Community Services (HCS) has introduced a new electronic prescription system at Jersey General Hospital’s pharmacy to reduce waiting times and enhance patient safety. Majority of prescriptions will now be submitted electronically via the EPMA system, eliminating the need for paper prescriptions.
This change is part of the government’s commitment to streamline processes and improve medication safety and operational efficiency. Electronic prescriptions offer benefits such as reducing queuing, identifying urgent prescriptions for quicker processing, and minimizing medication errors through clinical decision support.
Kevin Smith, pharmacy services manager, noted the increase in efficiency and safety due to electronic prescribing, while Professor Enda McVeigh emphasized the importance of this digital health transformation for a safer and more efficient healthcare experience.
Although there are exemptions where paper prescriptions will still be issued, Jersey General Hospital continues its digital transformation journey, including the implementation of System C’s critical care solution, CareFlow, and plans for an electronic patient record by 2025.
