If you keep scrolling through TikToks about “moon face” or “cortisol face” and are unsure about what that means, don’t worry, you’re not alone. I was in the same boat until I stumbled upon a plethora of videos on social media where people were showcasing their swollen faces and attributing it to high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. These videos, some with thousands of views, often end with calls to action to purchase an ebook or product to combat moon face. Dr. Gowri Reddy Rocco, a double board-certified family medicine physician specializing in regenerative and hormone health, sheds some light on this topic.

Moon face, or “moon facies,” refers to the swelling that occurs on the sides of the face, giving it a puffy and round appearance akin to a full moon, according to the Cleveland Clinic. This swelling is often caused by excessive cortisol production, either naturally by the body or due to medications such as corticosteroids like prednisone. Dr. Rocco explains that moon face is not an isolated condition but rather a side effect of underlying health issues affecting hormone levels in the body. While some common causes include corticosteroid use, Cushing’s syndrome, insulin resistance, and hypothyroidism, Dr. Rocco emphasizes the importance of consulting a healthcare professional for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Despite claims on TikTok, not everyone with facial puffiness is experiencing moon face. Factors such as water retention, weight gain, poor diet, and dehydration can contribute to a rounder face. Dr. Rocco cautions against quick fixes promoted online and stresses the importance of lifestyle habits in managing cortisol levels. She recommends prioritizing sleep, regular exercise, a balanced diet, reduced alcohol intake, engaging in enjoyable activities, laughing, and seeking therapy to manage stress effectively.

While cortisol is essential for bodily functions, elevated levels due to medical conditions or chronic stress can have detrimental effects. Dr. Rocco highlights the significance of maintaining healthy cortisol levels through lifestyle choices rather than relying on supplements or products. If concerned about facial puffiness or other symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for proper evaluation and treatment. Ultimately, achieving overall health and well-being involves addressing stress management and mental health alongside physical health practices.
