The New York Liberty (WNBA) are setting the sports world on fire with their stellar performances. Attending one of their home games guarantees you not only great basketball but also the electrifying dance moves of the Timeless Torches, a dance team comprised of seniors. Check out their Instagram page here!
Senior Planet sat down with Phyllis Spencer, age 59, a Timeless Torches dancer and team captain, to discuss her experience bringing energy and spirit to the WNBA as part of a dance troupe for individuals 40 and older.
Before joining the Timeless Torches, Phyllis spent 25 years as a New York City police officer and has been teaching fitness classes at the YMCA for almost two decades.
How did you end up joining the Timeless Torches?
I’ll never forget it. I heard about the auditions on a Saturday, which were happening that Monday. I thought to myself, “This is my chance, I’m over 50 and ready.” So, I took a day off from teaching aqua aerobics, rushed to Barclay Center, and became a Timeless Torch!
What are the benefits of being part of a dance team like the Timeless Torches?
It boosts your confidence, promotes better health practices, keeps your mind sharp with choreography, and above all, it’s just a blast!
How does one become part of a troupe like the Timeless Torches?
Not every NBA and WNBA team has a senior dance team, but many do. The Timeless Torches don’t hold auditions every year, so stay tuned for announcements!
When it comes to auditions, nerves are natural. You need to push through them, stay confident, and give it your all. You won’t know unless you try.
Any favorite memories from your time with the Torches?
We did a tribute to Tina Turner, and I got to portray Tina! It was an absolute blast. It was also the first time they showcased me executing a split in a performance.
The visibility of a dance team like the Torches is impactful. What does it mean for older adults to command such a prominent stage together?
It serves as an inspiration for everyone and provides younger generations with role models to look up to. Regardless of age, size, or skill level, the message is clear: get up, enjoy the moment, and have a blast.
Senior Planet’s motto is “aging with attitude!” What does aging with attitude mean to you?
My motto is “continuously love yourself more.” Add a touch of attitude to it. Because you deserve it.
Any final words?
This year, watch out for the Liberty as they aim for the top! Let’s go Liberty!
