In the United States, the average life expectancy is just over 78 years old. Thanks to modern inventions, people today are living much longer than they did in the past. Some experts believe that in the future, some people could live to be 1000 years old.
Why are people living longer? Life expectancy has more than doubled what it once was due to advancements in medicine, public health, and a reduction in infant mortality. The biggest contributor to the growing life expectancy is the fact that infant mortality is lower.
Could someone really live to be 1000 years old? Scientists have used genetic manipulation, calorie restriction, and drug therapy to extend the lifespan of various organisms. Could technology be the answer? Researchers are working on projects to replace and enhance human functions using smart health monitors, brain stimulators, and more. Additionally, using DNA alterations to “cure” aging and prolong life is a possibility.
It is impossible for us to know right now what kinds of advancements science and medicine will make in the future. But our children and grandchildren will likely live into old age. As to what “old age” will look like for them? Who knows- maybe they’ll be the first ones to live to be 1000 years old.
