Is there anything more luxurious than climbing into a bed with freshly washed sheets? Probably, but clean sheets are definitely a small pleasure in the realm of adulting that shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s recommended to change your sheets once a week to benefit your skin and allergies, but did you know that washing your pillows is just as important? Jason Tetro, a microbiologist and author of The Germ Files, explains that anything absorbent or porous, like pillows, can harbor bacteria. As you sleep, you sweat, produce oil, and shed skin cells, providing a feast for dust mites, microscopic pests that thrive in warm, humid environments. If you’re experiencing allergies or sneezing, it could be due to dust mites living in your pillows. To keep your bedding clean and germ-free, it’s important to wash your pillows regularly.

How often should you wash your pillows? Experts recommend washing your pillows every three months to keep them fresh and clean. For those with allergies, more frequent washing may be necessary. If washing your pillows frequently is a challenge, consider using a water-repelling pillow cover to protect them from outside bacteria and moisture. Dust mites can also be found on pillowcases, and harmful bacteria can be transferred from your skin to the fabric. It’s crucial to wash your pillowcases weekly, especially if you have skin issues like eczema or acne.

Can pillows be washed in the washing machine? Many types of pillows, such as synthetic, down-alternative, and feather pillows, can be washed in the washing machine. Always check the care label instructions before washing. To wash pillows in the machine, remove pillowcases and wash separately. Load the washer with two pillows to keep them balanced, and use a mild detergent on a gentle cycle. An extra rinse cycle with white vinegar can help remove detergent residue. Dry pillows in the dryer on a low heat setting, stopping to fluff them every 15 minutes.

For delicate pillows like memory foam, latex, or buckwheat pillows, hand washing or spot treating is recommended. Always check the care label for specific instructions. Hand washing involves using a gentle detergent, soaking, and squeezing out excess water before air drying. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals on pillows, and ensure they are completely dry before using them again. Follow these tips to keep your pillows clean and germ-free for a restful night’s sleep.
