While plant-based alternative milks have become increasingly popular, the main issue that often arises is their low nutritional value compared to dairy milk. However, for those who are lactose intolerant or sensitive to dairy, ultra-filtered milk can be a suitable alternative. Ultra-filtered milk is a new-age milk that is high in protein and calcium, with little to no lactose. But what exactly is ultra-filtered milk? Two registered dietitians provide insights into this specialized milk product.

“Ultra-filtered milk undergoes a process that removes water and lactose while increasing protein and calcium content,” explains Lauren Manaker, RDN. This results in a nutrient-dense milk that retains essential vitamins and minerals found in traditional milk while offering additional benefits.

The process of making ultra-filtered milk involves passing milk through filtration systems with semi-permeable membranes, as described by Meggie Connelly, RDN. These membranes separate water and lactose from protein and calcium, enhancing the nutritional profile of the final product. After filtration, water and fat may be added back to the milk, along with lactase to break down any remaining lactose. The milk then undergoes homogenization and pasteurization.

In comparison to regular milk, ultra-filtered milk has several advantages. Ultra-filtered milk offers higher protein, calcium, carbohydrate, and vitamin D content. Additionally, ultra-filtered milk is filtered to remove lactose, giving it a slightly sweeter taste without added sugars. It also has a thicker texture which can enhance certain recipes.

While ultra-filtered milk may be more expensive due to additional processing, it can be a beneficial option for those with lactose intolerance, diabetes, athletes seeking higher protein intake, and individuals focusing on bone health. Ultra-filtered milk can be used in place of regular milk in various recipes, offering a creamier texture in dishes like sauces, lattes, and creamy soups.

Some popular ultra-filtered milk brands include Fairlife, Slate, and Kroger, each offering unique nutritional benefits. Fairlife, for example, is fortified with vitamin D and lactose-free, making it a suitable option for those with lactose intolerance. Slate is high in protein and calcium, while Kroger offers an affordable alternative.

Overall, ultra-filtered milk provides a nutritious and versatile option for those looking to replace traditional dairy milk. Its benefits extend to a wide range of individuals, from those with lactose intolerance to athletes and individuals focused on bone health.
