As a dietitian, I understand the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption such as an increased risk of heart health concerns, certain cancers, and loss of inhibitions. However, I still enjoy an occasional cocktail while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This is why I practice Damp January, which involves limiting alcohol consumption instead of completely abstaining as in Dry January. This allows me to find a healthy balance in my drinking habits without going overboard. By setting a three-drink-per-week limit, I am able to be more mindful of my alcohol intake while still enjoying the occasional drink in social settings. This approach has had lasting effects on my drinking habits beyond January. Unlike the all-or-nothing approach of Dry January, Damp January helps me achieve long-term positive effects on my overall health and well-being. It is important to note that Damp January may not be suitable for those with alcohol dependency, who should follow their health care provider’s recommendations.
