Heart valve disease is a serious type of heart condition that affects the proper functioning of the heart’s valves, leading to disruptions in blood flow. Despite impacting more than 11 million Americans, awareness about valve disease remains low.
The Alliance for Aging Research conducted a survey revealing that an estimated 3 in 4 Americans have little knowledge about valve disease. To address this issue, the Alliance initiated the Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day campaign, bringing together 125 partners every February to raise awareness during American Heart Month.
Individuals at risk of valve disease may include those with other cardiovascular conditions, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a history of heart attack. Aging is also a common risk factor, with 1 in 10 adults over age 75 affected by the disease.
Symptoms of heart valve disease can vary, but include light-headedness, chest pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue. It’s essential to consult a medical professional for proper diagnosis and treatment options.
While valve disease may not be preventable, effective treatments are available for patients of all ages. Surgical interventions can lead to successful outcomes, with many patients returning to a normal life post-treatment.
