Healthcare AI cannot merely be “icing on a cake” says Denton
Professor Erika Denton, interim medical director for NHS England’s transformation directorate, emphasized the need for artificial intelligence in healthcare to prove its tangible value rather than just being an add-on. She stressed the importance of AI technologies making a significant impact and providing a cost-effective proposition.
Denton highlighted the key role of the NHS AI Lab’s funding in kickstarting advancements in AI technologies, citing the example of Brainomix’s AI solution in stroke imaging that has improved patient care pathways and outcomes.
To facilitate the adoption of proven and ethical AI applications in healthcare, NHS England has been piloting an AI Deployment Platform (AIDP) to streamline the selection and deployment process. Denton emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and reliability of AI solutions through centralized efforts.
In conclusion, Denton stressed the need for regulatory and ethical frameworks to support the proliferation of AI innovations in healthcare while maintaining safety and effectiveness.
