In 2023, Turkey faced a tragic earthquake in Antakya due to corruption and failures within the Turkish building authority. Despite the devastation, efforts are underway to rebuild the city sustainably with the help of Foster + Partners, collaborating with local NGOs and Turkish agencies. The plan includes careful design principles and aims to create a safe and sustainable new Antakya. The project, inspired by the resilience of the people, seeks to balance historic elements with modern enhancements for a sustainable future. With a strong focus on community rebuilding, trust, and safety, the masterplan aims to retain the town’s spirit and character while incorporating lessons from past disasters. Antakya’s rich history is embedded in the vision, honoring the city’s heritage and creating a revitalized urban environment where residents can feel at home. The design principles emphasize the preservation of historic streets and building scale to maintain the essence of Antakya. The project aims to respect the area’s urban character while embracing new developments that support a sustainable future.
