The electronic prescription service (EPS) is now available at some GP practices and community pharmacies in every health board in Wales following successful implementation in Cwm Taf Morgannwg, Swansea Bay, and Hywel Dda University Health Boards (UHBs).
The EPS, which was launched in Rhyl in November 2023 and expanded to other areas, allows healthcare providers to send electronic prescriptions directly to the patient’s chosen pharmacy, eliminating the need for paper prescriptions.
In Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB, the service was first implemented at New Surgery in Pencoed and later at Hirwaun Medical Centre, improving efficiency and accuracy in patient care.
In Swansea Bay, Greenhill Medical Centre became the first to benefit from EPS, with the support of local Well pharmacies. Similarly, in Hywel Dda UHB, Neyland Health Centre embraced EPS with the support of nearby pharmacies.
Jenny Pugh-Jones from Digital Health and Care Wales expressed her satisfaction with the successful implementation of EPS across Wales and highlighted plans for further expansion to benefit more communities.
Currently, 15 GP practices and 58 pharmacies in Wales are utilizing EPS, and over 160,000 prescription items have been dispensed through the system. EPS plays a crucial role in the Digital Medicines national transformation programme led by DHCW.
Pharmacy X has recently joined other technology suppliers to support the EPS initiative, showcasing ongoing advancements in healthcare technology across Wales.
