Virgin Media O2 Halts Digital Phone Line Rollout After Fatal Personal Alarm Failures
Virgin Media O2 has temporarily suspended the rollout of digital phone lines following the tragic deaths of two vulnerable individuals whose personal alarms failed when their analogue landlines were switched off. The UK is in the process of transitioning from traditional analogue phone systems to digital, with the analog system scheduled to be phased out by 2025.
While the Department for Science Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has not confirmed whether the device failures were a direct cause of death, both customers had underlying health conditions and relied on personal alarms for support. Virgin Media O2 has clarified that they did not provide the telecare devices that failed, and they are currently working to improve processes and communication regarding the switchover.
As the digitalization of phone networks progresses, telehealth products dependent on 2G or 3G connectivity will become obsolete. Alarm systems that rely on analogue phone lines for communication with care services will need to be upgraded to digital technology.
The telecom industry, including Virgin Media O2, has committed to strengthening protections for vulnerable consumers during the switchover process. It is crucial for all parties, including local authorities and telecare companies, to collaborate and ensure that adequate support is in place for those in need.
In 2019, Doro Care warned that telehealth providers must act swiftly to prepare for the digital switchover. The industry is urged to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of all customers during this transition period.
