Gifts of the Nile

The film “Gifts of the Nile” showcases the efforts of River Hero Alban De Ménonville and VeryNile team as they work to remove plastics from the Nile River in Cairo, Egypt. This initiative not only focuses on cleaning the river but also educates the community on the importance of conservation.

The “Reviving Cairo Fishermen” project, initiated by VeryNile, enlists local fishermen and women to clean out plastic from the river while providing them with a fair wage. This grassroots approach not only cleans the river but also offers additional income to the community.

The film highlights the daily lives of locals like Loza Mahmoud and her husband, Hamed Aly Hamed, who rely on the Nile River for their livelihood. Through the efforts of VeryNile, plastic is removed and transformed into useful products, creating a sustainable business model.

By involving the youth and creating awareness about conservation, VeryNile aims to ensure the future health of the Nile River. Through collaboration and innovative solutions, they are turning a problem into an opportunity that benefits both the community and the environment.

We have 40 full-time people (artisans, plastic operators) and we are working with around 100 fishermen; so that’s a total of 140 local families benefiting directly from this project,” said Alban De Ménonville. “We translate a problem into opportunities that positively affect our communities and the health of the Nile River.”
