Central Camden Primary Care Network’s community bowel clinic has revolutionized patient care by reducing waiting times by up to 74 weeks. This remarkable progress is attributed to the utilization of cutting-edge technology, specifically the LuminEye X1 digital rectoscope from SurgEase, at the Bloomsbury Clinic.
Traditionally, examining the anorectal tract in general practice has been challenging. However, the introduction of the LuminEye device has transformed the process. With its advanced HD camera, physicians can now visualize the lower bowel in high definition, aiding in the prompt diagnosis of conditions such as rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and haemorrhoids.
Dr. Ammara Hughes, a general practitioner at Bloomsbury Surgery and clinical director of Central Camden PCN, highlighted the benefits of the LuminEye technology. She emphasized how the device allows for secure storage of images in the cloud, enabling remote consultation with hospital consultants for quick and accurate assessments.
The successful implementation of the technology has enabled physician associates within Central Camden PCN to conduct procedures independently, under the guidance of colorectal surgeon Mr. Alexander Von Roon. This streamlined approach has significantly increased the clinic’s capacity to see and treat patients efficiently.
Through the use of the LuminEye, Central Camden PCN has been able to reduce waiting times for NHS treatment to just four weeks at their bowel screening clinic. This proactive approach not only enhances patient care but also delivers substantial cost savings, with an estimated annual saving of almost £250,000.
The community bowel clinic is projected to see over 200 patients by the end of the pilot, further illustrating the significant impact of this innovative technology on healthcare delivery in the region.
