For those not succumbing to the obesity epidemic or jeopardizing their long-term health, life expectancy is steadily increasing with each generation. Advancements in life sciences and medicine, despite regulatory hurdles, offer better prospects. The choice to live better or worse impacts our health, regardless of technological progress. This study highlights the long-term effects of lifestyle choices, such as weight and smoking, on longevity.
In a case-control study of individuals aged 80 and older, those with the highest healthy lifestyle score had a greater chance of reaching centenarian age. Lifestyle factors significantly influenced life expectancy, with a focus on the elderly rather than middle-aged groups. A healthy lifestyle score was constructed based on smoking, exercise, and dietary diversity, showing better health outcomes with higher scores.
During the follow-up, individuals with a high HLS-100 score were more likely to become centenarians. Adherence to a healthy lifestyle, even in old age, is crucial for promoting healthy aging and longevity. Strategic plans to improve lifestyle behaviors among older adults could contribute to better outcomes.
