The beekeepers of Alvin in Brazoria County, Texas are baffled as to why someone would take the time to light up dozens of beehives. Just as the bees were entering their most active breeding season, their hives were set on fire, causing major damage. The Brazoria County Beekeepers Association is offering a reward for information leading to the conviction of the perpetrators.
No Witnesses, Tough Case
A deputy officer discovered the crime and extinguished the fire, but the damage had already been done. The BCBA has expressed their shock and outrage on Facebook, garnering 7,500 shares. Lieutenant Varon Snelgrove of the Sherriff’s office called the case unusual and challenging due to the lack of witnesses in the rural community.
Steve Brackmann, president of the BCBA, estimated the loss of 20 hives, each containing about 30,000 bees. He expressed concern that the farmers’ businesses are heavily at stake due to the destruction.
Reward Offered for Relevant Information
Dane Beito, a local bee farmer, suspects that the perpetrator must have substantial knowledge of beekeeping. The Brazoria County Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information, and BCBA is offering an additional $1,000 for the most relevant informant.
