AI-powered physio platform to be deployed in the NHS
A new AI-powered physio clinic, Flok Health, is set to launch in the NHS by Autumn 2024, with the goal of reducing physiotherapy waiting lists. According to a report by Versus Arthritis, over 300,000 people in the UK are currently waiting for physiotherapy, with 26% waiting for more than three months.
Flok Health offers same-day automated video appointments with an AI physiotherapist through a smartphone app. The clinic utilizes a clinical decision engine to accurately replicate best-practice clinical reasoning.
During a trial period from May to December 2023, more than 1,000 NHS staff with back pain from various healthcare facilities experienced reduced wait times for physiotherapy thanks to Flok Health’s AI clinic. The technology also led to a 50% increase in in-person musculoskeletal appointment wait lists when the AI clinic was not in use.
Once fully implemented, eligible patients can either be referred to Flok Health through a healthcare setting or self-refer. The platform has been registered with the CQC as a healthcare provider.
In addition, NHS Borders has introduced Phio, another digital solution aiming to enhance access to musculoskeletal care in the region.
