Calorie restriction has a significant impact on health and longevity in short-lived species studied for aging research, leading to substantial changes in cellular biochemistry regulation. Most anti-aging approaches discovered so far target pathways influenced by calorie restriction response. However, the effectiveness of these interventions decreases with increasing species complexity. For example, the positive effects of treatments like rapamycin, resveratrol, and metformin decrease as species life span increases. This limited translatability between species can be attributed to various factors such as differences in metabolic scenarios and redundancy in pathways. It is important to consider these challenges in the development of anti-aging therapies to understand the law of diminishing returns in complex biological systems.
