For the fifth consecutive year, Senior Planet from AARP sought out individuals age 60 and older for their “Senior Planet Sponsored Athletes” program. These individuals are passionate about fitness, have set wellness-related goals, and are eager to share their experiences to inspire their peers. The selection committee chose five new athletes, whose stories are sure to inspire you.

Jan Haig, at 67, is a lifelong fitness enthusiast who was unexpectedly forced to give up running and high-impact classes due to a lower back issue. However, she has found a new passion in indoor cycling and hopes to become a certified instructor, specializing in catering to injured or aging athletes.

William Lee, aged 66, discovered the importance of fitness after being diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney disease. His dedication to daily workouts saved his life, and he now hopes to inspire more seniors to prioritize fitness and wellness.

Harold Sanco, 62, underwent two emergency lumbar surgeries, leaving him immobile and weak. However, through patience and perseverance, he has fully recovered and is thrilled to share his journey of returning to fitness after back surgery.

Thomas Simek, now 71, decided to reclaim his health after being diagnosed with several health issues in his late 50s. Through changes in lifestyle, nutrition, and adding different exercises to his routine, he now competes in track and field alongside his granddaughter and has appeared on American Ninja Warrior.

Nancey Walker, 62, once weighed 250 pounds and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and Ketoacidosis. She has since become a cheerleader for her family, showing them that it’s possible to reclaim health as they age. She’s found joy in a head-to-toe approach to fitness and hopes to inspire others to move at any age.

These five amazing athletes will share their journeys and fitness routines through blog posts and virtual fitness events on seniorplanet.org/athletes. You can also join Senior Planet’s daily health and wellness programs, subscribe to their YouTube channel, sign up for newsletters, and follow them on social media to connect with these inspiring athletes and possibly find a new love for fitness along the way.
