Insulin resistance, prediabetes, and how they affect your overall health are important elements of understanding your body’s well-being. Everyone can benefit from learning the ins and outs of regulating blood sugar levels, not just those with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Insulin resistance occurs when cells in the body become less responsive to insulin, leading to a host of potential health complications, including an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. While the exact causes of insulin resistance are still under study, leading a sedentary lifestyle, having a family history of diabetes, and excess body fat are all factors that may contribute to its development. Fortunately, it can often be reversed with lifestyle changes, such as incorporating a diet high in fiber and protein, managing stress and maintaining a healthy weight, among others. If you suspect you may have insulin resistance or are concerned about your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider. The more you know about insulin resistance and prediabetes and the steps you can take to manage it, the better equipped you’ll be to care for your body and safeguard your long-term health.
